Is it Art?
Fashion is increasingly being viewed as art, not just commerce. Fashion’s relationship with the Art world has been argued since the dawn of Haute Couture in the beginning of the 20th century. One of the founders, Paul Poiret would adamantly called himself an artist rather than a dressmaker. The 19th century view of art was Painting, Culture and Architecture, everything else was deemed “decorative arts” and considered lesser.
Today, the definitions of art have become more elastic resulting in a greater appreciation of fashion as more than clothing. For example, Alexander McQueen’s shows were a form of performance and installation art. Yes, the catwalk is a promotional tool to sell a collection but at the level of someone like McQueen- how can it be said that that is it’s main purpose?
