Make Do and Mend

In today’s world, we are bombarded with information and saturated in images, 3.2 billion images are shared each day online. The wealth of knowledge available all the time is creating a so- called ‘Brain Drain’. This is the term used to describe how people struggle to filter information since they are digitally saturated in it. The “Make Do and Mend” mentality of the 20th century has been side lined as cheap, convenient fast fashion means you no longer have to spend time darning or sewing. However, extending the life of our garments is one of the best ways we can slow fashion down. Simple skills such as sewing on a button, stitching a ripped seam or removing a stain will mean you will continue to wear the garment that you would otherwise shelve or get rid of.

How to Mend

⁃ Buy yourself a basic sewing kit

⁃ If you can’t sew yourself, I bet you have a friend that can.

⁃ Use a local tailor- they can give a garment a new lease of life just by changing small things.
