Technical Skills

Today there is a lack of awareness and education about traditional crafts, highlighted by the Radcliffe List of Endangered Crafts. When researching and interviewing some of the great textile manufacturers of the north, they said the biggest problem facing the British fashion industry is the lack of technical skills of younger generations. This could be down to the rise of digital which has resulted in less interest in hand skilled crafts. There is also the image problem of ‘The Great Northern Powerhouses’ which are perceived to be a lot less glamorous than the fashion industry in a city like London, where many young hopefuls aim to go to.
